first_imgThe establishment of a Montserrat-based airline has moved a step closer after Montserrat Airways secured new funding.Nigel Harris, the company’s managing director, said that a local airline service would prove hugely beneficial to the island’s economy.”A Montserrat-based airline will provide the stability, reliability and flexibility to transfer visitors to Montserrat as well as other islands,” he commented.Mr Harris added that “the development of tourist-related services” will be a priority for the new airline.Montserrat Airways has announced its intention to fly under the name ‘Fly Montserrat’ and use the catchphrase ‘Leave no (Montserrat bound) passenger behind’.The funding was granted from the Tourism Challenge Fund, which is sponsored by the government of Montserrat.It is hoped that Fly Montserrat will begin its services on or before June 1st.The Caribbean island is the only country outside Ireland where St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday, with Montserrat having held its annual St Patrick’s Day Festival between March 14th-21st.
