Kathleen Smiley Named to NFCA All-South Region Team

first_img#ARGOS#Print Friendly Version COMPLETE ALL-REGION SELECTIONSLOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kathleen Smiley was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region second team on Wednesday afternoon, the organization announced. The University of West Florida softball junior led the Argonauts offensively throughout conference play, earning the first all-region honor of her career.Smiley, a .299 hitter with six doubles, four home runs and a team-high 24 walks, is the 31st NFCA All-South Region selection in program history.The Pensacola, Florida, native destroyed Gulf South Conference pitching throughout the season, batting .369, slugging .600, and posting a team-best .528 on-base percentage in league play that was good for third in the conference. Her 21 walks in GSC action were also the second-most in the league.Since the start of March, Smiley has led UWF in batting (.373), walks (20) and on-base percentage (.522), after finishing the UNA series with a .125 batting average. Smiley’s 25 RBIs for this year have given her 104 in her career, tying her with Rhiannon Sassman for the most career RBIs among active UWF players.Smiley is riding a six-game on-base streak, during which time she has reached base 10 times and driven in five runs. She also has five multi-hit and four multi-RBI games this year.The Gulf South Conference had 11 programs earn All-Region honors, and 18 of the 26 all-region honorees on the two All-South Region teams come from GSC schools.The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s eight regions with first and second team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2018 NFCA Division II All-America squads.Smiley and UWF will face South 2 Region host North Alabama in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday at the UNA Softball Complex in Florence, Alabama.
