Kimbe RFL gear up for tourneys

first_imgRugby League BY SIMON KESLEP Kimbe Rugby Football League 2019 season champions Kimbe Car Rental Services Steelers A grade team are gearing up to attend two forthcoming tournaments. Team patron and sponsor Freddie Kumai said he is pleased to see secondary school students progressing into senior grades. Their A grade team came from seventh place to make it into the elimination finals. They went on to claim their maiden premiership title after defeating street neighbors STK Bullets 17-11 in the grand final. Kumai said the leadership of former Rabaul Gurias and their skipper Jonathan Levi guided the team to win the grand final. He added that Levi attributed the win to discipline, commitment and respect – the core values of the club. Two other veteran playmakers of the team who supported Levi to boost the young stars include Rex Opa and Thomas Wasa. “Although the club is new, players have developed mental fitness with proper training,” he said. He said their premiership win has boosted everyone to start their training preparations for the upcoming Referendum 9s in Bougainville from October 22-24. “The spirit in the camp is high and everyone is looking forward to the tournament. Few experience players from Kimbe Cutters are slotted into the team to add speed and morality. Jack Voku, Steven Bruno, Mark Alunga, Kopman Value and Anthony Longa were training together with the team,” Kumai said. The likes of Cutters season players like Jason Jimmy, Alex Rova, Fredrick Rumangio, Edward Yukil and Oswald Hela was the added experience boost for fellow young stars in the team like Freddy Rova, Kevin Banovo, Albert Kautu, Max Balema, Lionel Balema and Nathan Saura. He said the team after competing in the Referendum 9s will head straight to Kokopo for the National Club championship later next month. The team is currently doing fundraising and seeking sponsorship from business houses to attend these two tournaments.last_img read more
